Yonder Mountain String Band’s Halloween show featured several Grateful Dead songs among the many artists covered on Sunday night. The festive concert took place at Thunderbird Music Hall in Pittsburgh.
The two set performance began with the zombie costumed band covering “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” by Buzzcocks. A couple of songs later came the first Dead cover of the night in the form of “Brown-Eyed Women.”
The rest of the show would see additional Grateful Dead covers including “Fire on the Mountain,” “Shakedown Street” (which YMSB covered for JamBase’s Songs Of Their Own Grateful Dead covers project), “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and “Touch Of Grey.” Yonder also worked in Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” which was a live Dead staple.
Non-Dead covers played by Yonder Mountain String Band on Halloween included Shawn Camp’s “Damned If the Right One Didn’t Go Wrong,” Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues,” Misfits’ “20 Eyes,” Billy Joel’s “Travelin’ Prayer” and the traditional “Raleigh and Spencer.” The setlist was bolstered with originals mixed in with the covers, such as “Landfall,” “Troubled Mind” and “Angel,” among others.
