Yo La Tengo Welcomes Eleventh Dream Day & Bush Tetras Members In New York City

Yo La Tengo wrapped their eight-night Hanukkah run with a show Sunday night at The Bowery Ballroom. The band was joined by members Eleventh Dream Day and Bush Tetras, as well as guitarist Ira Kaplan’s mother Marilyn Kaplan making her usual appearance at the end of the concert, which was a benefit for Letters To Santa and One Simple Wish.

Eleventh Dream Day served as the evening’s first act. Comedian Joe Pera then performed, followed by YLT taking the stage and opening their set with The Beatles’ “From Me To You,” sung as “From Me To Jews.” Members of Eleventh Dream Day, drummer Janet Beveridge Bean, keyboardist Mark Greenberg, guitarist James Elkington and bassist Doug McCombs, then emerged for a slow version of “Today Is The Day.”

EDD guitarist Rick Rizzo came on for “Stockholm Syndrome,” while Elkington exited. Various configurations of the members of EDD contributed to “The Crying Of Lot G,” “Avalon Or Someone Similar,” “Season Of The Shark,” “Two Trains,” “When It’s Dark,” and covers of “Goin’ Back” by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and “Group Grope” by The Fugs. Beveridge Bean (who played throughout the set) and Rizzo remained for “Some Kinda Fatigue,” before Ira Kaplan and multi-instrumentalists Georgia Hubley and James McNew delivered “Autumn Sweater.”

The set continued with Beveridge Bean coming back for “Deeper Into Movies” and The Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray” with Rizzo, McCombs and Greenberg joining in on the cover. Yo La Tengo ended the set with “Our Way To Fall.”

The encore began with “The Whole of the Law” by The Only Ones. Cynthia Sley and Pat Place of the Bush Tetras were then brought out for “Dum Dum” and “Too Many Creeps,” which surrounded a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run.” The night ended with Kaplan bringing his mother out to sing Cat Stevens’ “Here Comes My Baby” (with Mark Luecke whistling) and her customary “My Little Corner Of The World” finale.
