Yo La Tengo Welcomes Dream Syndicate & Others In New York City

Yo La Tengo continued their traditional eight-night Hanukkah residency at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on Friday. Night Six of the guest-filled run, which benefitted Abortion Acess Front, saw the three-piece of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew welcoming The Dream Syndicate and members of opening act Jaimie Branch’s Fly or Die.

Comedian Dina Hashem would also help get the show underway before Yo La Tengo kicked things off with “Cherry Chapstick” from their 2000 LP And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. “She May, She Might” from 2018’s There’s A Riot Going On then encompassed a cover of The Urinals’ ”Ack Ack Ack Ack” (YLT opened with a Urinals cover the night previous). Electr-O-Pura’s “Pablo And Andrea” then proceeded a cover of Randy Newman’s “Have You Seen My Baby.”

Jamie Branch’s Fly Or Die drummer Chad Taylor then joined YLT on “Tired Hippo” and would stick around for the remainder of the set which continued with “I’m On My Way” off 2009’s Popular Songs and “I’ll Be Around” from 2013’s Fade. The rest of Taylor’s Fly Or Die bandmates then joined in including bandleader/trumpeter Jamie Branch, bassist Jason Ajemian and cellist Lester St. Louis on “As the Hour Grows Late” and would stay on for “Let’s Be Still,” “The Summer” and “Moby Octopad.” YLT and Taylor then went it alone for a cover of Angry Samoans’ “Right Side of My Mind” ahead of “From A Motel 6” and set closer, “Mushroom Cloud Of Hiss.”

Yo La Tengo then welcomed The Dream Syndicate led by Steve Wynn (Wynn joined YLT during their 2018 Hanukkah run) for the encore, which consisted mostly of Dream Syndicate songs beginning with “Definitely Clean.” Dream Syndicate then continued sans Ira and James on a cover from their fellow Paisley Underground act The Bangles, “Hero Takes A Fall.” Kaplan and McNew then returned for “Some Kinda Itch” and “Tell Me When It’s Over” to bring Night Six to a close.
