Wilco’s Nels Cline Joins Tedeschi Trucks At Red Rocks

Tedeschi Trucks concluded their two-night Fireside Live run at Red Rocks on Saturday. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi welcomed Wilco guitarist Nels Cline for the entire second set at the iconic Colorado venue.

Tedeschi Trucks got things underway with The Beatles’ “I Got A Feeling.” Tedeschi led the band — guitarist Derek Trucks, keyboardist Gabe Dixon, drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Eady (who made his debut with the band at Red Rocks), bassist Brandon Boone and vocalist Mike Mattison — through the Let It Be cut ahead of the title track to Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 2013 album, Made Up Mind, which featured a characteristically fiery slide solo from Trucks.

The band would follow with another title track, this time from their 2016 album Let Me Get By, and would also play the LP’s “Just As Strange” after “It’s So Heavy.” A cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out My Life Woman” then came ahead of the TTB classic “Midnight In Harlem.” Tedeschi Trucks closed out the first set with a Blind Faith song — the Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood fronted supergroup — “Had To Cry Today.”

The band would emerge sans Susan but with Nels Cline in tow for another song by a band with Steve Winwood, “Don’t Want You Know More.” Trucks naturally performed the song, a Tedeschi Trucks debut, in the style of The Allman Brothers Band, who included an instrumental version on their 1969 self-titled debut album. Trucks and Cline sounded great in the double guitar attack and would also take individual runs. Susan then emerged for “Don’t Want You No More’s” companion on The Allman Brothers Band, “It’s Not My Cross To Bear,” which was also a debut.

Tedeschi Trucks then turned to original material in “High & Mighty,” “Shame” and the Susan solo song “Looking For Answers,” which appears on her 1998 album, Just Won’t Burn. After Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “That Did It” (which hadn’t been played since 2017, as per SetlistFM), Tedeschi Trucks returned to the Allmans with “Dreams” as well as set closer “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” The classic “Bound For Glory” would serve as the encore.
