Watch Widespread Panic Jam With Fiddler Ann Marie Calhoun At Outside Lands In 2008

Widespread Panic recently unveiled video from their August 24, 2008 appearance at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The set saw WSP welcoming renowned rock violinist Ann Marie Calhoun to close out the set.

Calhoun has performed and recorded with a number of notable artists over the years including Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley and Joss Stone in the supergroup SuperHeavy as well as with Aretha Franklin, Ringo Starr, Jethro Tull, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band and more. Calhoun played with Panic four times in 2008 beginning on April 26 in Raleigh and culminating with her sit-in at Outside Lands in August, her last appearance with the band to date.

Widespread Panic kicked off their Outside Lands slot with their classic cover of Jerry Joseph’s “Climb To Saftey” before heading into “Fishwater.” A standalone “Henry Parsons Died” prefaced a seamless section of “Up All Night,” “Solid Rock” and “Action Man” followed by a pairing of “Papa’s Home” and another Joseph tune, “Chainsaw City.”

WSP then welcomed Calhoun beginning with “Her Dance Needs No Body.” The song is off Panic’s 2008 album Free Somehow, which arrived in February of that year. The Outside Lands play marked the 11th performance of the song overall since its debut on April 1, 2008, as per Everyday Companion. Following a short solo from guitarist Jimmy Herring, Ann Marie added some rousing fiddle on the tune punctuated by dynamics from the rhythm section of bassist Dave Schools, drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz.

Todd and Sunny then led the intro to the favorite “Surprise Valley.” The jam featured the virtuosity of both Herring and Calhoun before heading into the JoJo Hermann-sung rocker “Blackout Blues” and a triumphant return to “Surprise Valley,” which boasted more wild and joyous jamming. Calhoun’s sit-in and the set came to a close with “Ain’t Life Grand,” which saw frontman John Bell picking up his mandolin, a close cousin to the fiddle.
