Grateful Dead‘s “Fire On The Mountain” performance out of “Space” is latest installment of the band’s All The Years Live video series. The sequence was captured at Radio City Music Hall on Halloween 1980 and originally released as part of the 1981 concert film Dead Ahead.
October 31, 1980 was the last of eight GD shows at the famed venue featuring two electric sets and an acoustic performance. The band came to Radio City following 15 concerts in San Francisco and two in New Orleans with the same format.
“Fire On The Mountain” consists of music penned by Mickey Hart with Robert Hunter’s lyrics. Grateful Dead debuted the song live on March 18, 1977 and included a studio version on their Shakedown Street album the next year.
Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux wrote the following about the sequence:
A very rare “Fire On The Mountain” that was not preceded by “Scarlet Begonias,” this fine rendition, a standout performance from both Dead Set and Dead Ahead, this one comes out of “Space” incredible smoothly, and is one of the cooler transitions you’ll hear out “Space.”
