The Grateful Dead unveiled official video featuring their cover of Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” from a 1990 concert as the latest installment of the All The Years Live video series. The previously unreleased footage was filmed at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville on July 6, 1990.
Bob Dylan originally issued “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” on his 1965 studio album Bringing It All Back Home. The Dead’s first known cover of the song took place at The Matrix in San Franciso on January 6, 1966 as per Setlist.FM. “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” was performed by the band a total of 145 times through February 19, 1995.
Jerry Garcia handled lead vocals on “Baby Blue” in Louisville. The cover came as the evening’s encore. Garcia was joined in the band at the time by guitarist Bob Weir, keyboardist Brent Mydland, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Brent Mydland tragically died at age 37 on July 26, 1990 — less than three weeks after the Louisville show.
“One of the Grateful Dead’s earliest Bob Dylan covers, going back to a handful of performances in 1966, ‘It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue’ was played primarily as an encore, in particular from 1981 onward,” stated GD archivist David Lemieux in a note accompanying the video. “This excellent rendition from the Dead’s Louisville performance on the Summer Tour of 1990 is the final one featuring Brent Mydland.”
