Watch Charlie Watts Final The Rolling Stones Concert

Legendary drummer for The Rolling Stones Charlie Watts sadly died on Tuesday at the age of 80. One of the greatest, most influential and rock-solid drummers of all time, Watts performed at every Stones show from 1963 up until his final concert with the band on August 30, 2019 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. In honor of Charlie, JamBase takes a look at video from the unflappable drummer’s final Rolling Stones concert for this edition of Full Show Friday.

The show got underway with a raucous “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The song often comes at the end of sets but as Hurricane Dorian sat off the Florida coast — and caused the show to be moved up a day — “Jack Flash” and its “crossfire hurricane” line was an appropriate opener. The set continued with “It’s Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It)” and “Tumbling Dice,” the latter one of Charlie’s finest beat creations with a swaggering swing that cradles the chunky guitars.

The Stones then turned to relatively newer material with “Out Of Control” off their 1997 album, Bridges To Babylon, ahead of “Under My Thumb” (the band’s “by request” song) and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The core four — Watts, frontman Mick Jagger and guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood then decamped to a smaller stage on the 31-yard line at the home of the Miami Dolphins for stripped-down versions of country-tinged favorites “Sweet Virginia” and “Dead Flowers.”

The renowned rockers would return to the main stage for classics “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Honky Tonk Women,” after which Mick introduced the band. “Miami hurricane category 4, Charlie Watts,” Mick said as the drummer then came to center stage and took a bow. Next, Keith took his usual spotlight tunes consisting of “You Got The Silver” from Let It Bleed and Some Girls’ “Before They Make Me Run.”

The Stones then reeled off a bevy of classics to close out the set including “Miss You,” “Paint It Black,” “Midnight Rambler,” Start Me Up” and “Brown Sugar” to bring the set to a close. Another fitting song given the hurricane, “Gimme Shelter,” kicked off the encore followed by “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” There have undoubtedly been countless kid drummers over the past half-century who have sat at the kit and learned Charlie Watts’ beat to The Stones classic, which would be the final song he played live with the band.
