The String Cheese Incident welcomed Big Head Todd and The Monsters frontman Todd Park Mohr to sit-in on Saturday night at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California. Mohr joined SCI on a Grateful Dead cover and Cheese original at the start of last night’s second set.
Big Head Todd & The Monsters began the evening with a support set. SCI then opened their first of two frames by pairing oldie “Best Feeling” and the more recent original “Can’t Wait Another Day.” Next up was the return of “¡Bam!” for its 2021 premiere. Bill Nershi then led the band through “I Want You” ahead of a well-jammed “Sand Dollar” that eventually landed on “Sirens.” The String Cheese Incident ended last night’s first set with “Colorado Bluebird Sky.”
Longtime SCI collaborator and friend Todd Park Mohr emerged with the band at the beginning of Saturday’s second set. “In the spirit of the Days Between, we’re going to do one of the Garcia/Hunter tunes, because why wouldn’t we,” bassist Keith Moseley told the crowd. Mohr then fronted Cheese on their first cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil” since July 8, 2006. The band and their guest jammed the Dead tune into a nicely extended “Outside & Inside.”
The String Cheese Incident continued on without Mohr for the rest of the evening. Two fairly new numbers followed the guest spot as Michael Kang‘s “Into The Blue” gave way to “My One & Only” by Kyle Hollingsworth. A high-energy “Bollymunster” came next before Cheese wrapped the set with a run of “Desert Dawn,” “Boo Boo’s Pik-A-Nik” and the beloved “Black Clouds.” SCI ended their first run at the Berkeley Greek in nine years with a “Smile” encore.
