The Rolling Stones brought their 2021 U.S. Tour to Detroit on Monday for a performance at Ford Field. Mick Jagger and company paid tribute to one of the city’s greatest bands by busting out a cover of The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” for the first time in over 14 years during last night’s show.
“Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” came in the five-slot after the legendary rockers opened with a run of “Street Fighting Man,” “You Got Me Rocking,” “19th Nervous Breakdown” and “Tumbling Dice.” Last night’s “You Got Me Rocking” was just the second of the tour.
“You can’t come to Detroit and not do a Motown number,” Jagger told the crowd before the group lit into The Temptations classic. The Rolling Stones previously released a cover of “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” on their 1974 studio album, It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll. Last night marked The Stones’ 110th live “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and first since August 26, 2007 as per Setlist.FM. Saxophonist Karl Denson punctuated the song with a meaty solo.
The Temptations cover was followed by the third “Wild Horses” of the year which won out in fan-voting. From there, The Rolling Stones stuck to a similar script as other 2021 tour stops. Last night’s 19-song performance saw guitarist Keith Richards front “Connection” and “Before They Make Me Run,” while the encore featured beloved classics “Gimme Shelter” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”
Next up for The Rolling Stones is a stop in Austin on Saturday night. Watch fan-shot video featuring last night’s “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” below:
