The Disco Biscuits returned to Philadelphia’s TD Pavilion at The Mann Center For The Performing Arts on Saturday to headline the second and final night of City Bisco 2021. Bisco’s first set in their hometown came to a close with beloved rarity “Trucker’s Choice” which hadn’t seen action in nearly four years.
Luke the Knife (Luke Miller and Lotus) opened the concert with a DJ set. Then, Lotus took the stage for guitarist Mike Rempel‘s final Philadelphia show with the band. Lotus mixed classic songs such as “Spiritualize,” “Middle Road” and “It’s All Clear To Me Now” with more recent fare, including “Condor” and “Phantom Tooth.”
The Disco Biscuits went with “Mulberry’s Dream” to kick off their first set last night. From there, the jamtronica quartet linked an unfinished “Reactor” and the first “The Champions” of 2021 with an expansive and exploratory jam. “The Champions” gave way to a “Tractorbeam Jam” interlude (“Revive”) before the band dug in on the middle of “Crickets.” Saturday’s “Crickets” jam featured a big peak before the Biscuits busted out “Trucker’s Choice” to end the set. Last night’s “Trucker’s Choice” was the first since November 17, 2017 — a span of 117 shows.
Saturday’s second Biscuits set was a seamless affair that got underway with “Mindless Dribble.” Next up was “Anthem,” a song the group debuted in 2019. “Anthem” bled into the quartet’s third cover of Simon Posford’s Hallucinogen gem “Gamma Goblins” since 2006. The debut of an original “Tractorbeam Jam” followed along with an inverted “Abraxas.” Keyboardist Aron Magner wrote the electronic-tinged instrumental that the band hasn’t named yet, which was dubbed “Tractorbeam Jam” on the band’s setlist. The Disco Biscuits then capped the set with “Story Of The World” and brought City Bisco to a close with a “We Like To Party” encore.
