Tedeschi Trucks Band — who recently reunited as a full band at LOCKN’ Farm — launched their Merlefest set with “High & Mighty” followed by “Let Me Get By.” The first cover of the evening came in the form of “Bell Bottom Blues,” which appears on Derek And The Dominos 1970 album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs as well as TTB’s recently released live album and homage to the record, Layla Revisited. TTB’s “Do I Look Worried” came next.
Susan Tedeschi then strummed out the opening strains to The Wood Brothers’ “Smoke Ring Halo.” The song appears on The Wood Brothers’ 2011 album of the same name. Susan would go it alone for the first verse before the band quietly swelled in behind her. Guitarist Derek Trucks also plucked out a weepy slide solo that, as per usual, was exactly what the song needed before Tedeschi and backing vocalists Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour brought it home.
TTB continued on with their recently debuted cover of Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues” ahead of Susan’s “Just Won’t Burn,” the title track to her 1998 sophomore solo album. Another Layla number in “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” followed before a take on Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces.” Next came TTB originals “Shame” and “Midnight In Harlem.” The band closed out the set with Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” before encoring with their own “Bound For Glory.”
