Neighbor Plays Hourlong ‘Free Bird’ At Stone Church

Neighbor made their debut at The Stone Church in Newmarket, New Hampshire on Saturday a special one. The Boston-based quartet treated the capacity crowd to an hourlong, tease-filled cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” as their second set for the concert held at an outdoor stage setup outside the venue.

After opening with a seamless run of “Without,” “Chickens” and “Clover,” the band consisting of keyboardist Richard James, drummer Dean Johnston, guitarist Lyle Brewer and bassist Dan Kelly dug in on “Take Me Alive.” Neighbor foreshadowed what would come by teasing “Free Bird” within a “Take Me Alive” that gave way to “What Should Will Never Be.” Next, “Terror For Free” was followed by the debut of “Sail On” before a drum solo connected “Cuba Street” and the set-closing “Cucamonga Carl.”

A gentleman acting as the mayor of Newmarket hilariously presented Neighbor with a key to the city to start the second set. The four-piece then lit into “Free Bird.” Neighbor began the debut cover straight before breaking through the song’s typical structure around the 10-minute mark. Various jam spaces were then explored by the band and they fittingly filled “Free Bird” with teases and jams on songs featuring “Free” in the title on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Included within were bits and pieces of such tunes as George Michael’s “Freedom,” “Free” by Phish, David Bowie’s “Memory Of A Free Festival” and “Freedom” by Rage Against The Machine. Neighbor also teased their own songs “Headrush,” “Pine Tree,” “Cucamonga Carl” and “Take Me Alive” as well as the Genesis classic “That’s All.” The quartet toyed with tempos and varied keys throughout the stellar improvisation. Neighbor’s lengthy jam on Phish’s “Free” paved the way for a return to “Free Bird” to cap the set and concert.
