Joy Oladokun is featured on this weekend’s Austin City Limits episode broadcasting on PBS on Saturday, January 15. JamBase is pleased to premiere exclusive video footage of Oladokun performing “Taking The Heat” live at The Moody Theater in Austin.
Oladokun, who shares the hour with St. Vincent, makes her ACL debut. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter focuses on songs from her breakthrough album, in defense of my own happiness, including “Taking The Heat.” Joy Oladokun wrote the song and dedicated her Austin City Limits performance of the tune to the late rapper Mac Miller.
“He was one of the greats that I think we saw in a flash of time in our lifetime,” Oladokun told the crowd. “I think a lot about how often musicians tell us they’re unhappy and then something happens and we’re surprised. We’re like ‘we didn’t know you were unhappy.’ As I started to get into this job I was like, ‘How do I take care of myself? How do I last for a longtime? How do I become the Black Bruce Springsteen?’ A question I ask myself once a day,” Joy added before describing “Taking The Heat” as a song about “the pressure that we put on the people that we see through our screens.”
