Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Debuts Pink Floyd Cover In New Haven

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead capped a nine-show residency at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut on Saturday with a concert that included a debut cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” The quintet’s “Comfortably Numb” performance came after the band devoted an “Other Shit” set to Pink Floyd songs at LOCKN’ Farm on August 14.

Drummer Joe Russo, guitarists Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento opened Saturday’s concert with a jam that eventually led into “Don’t Ease Me In.” Hamilton sang both the opener and the “Cats Under The Stars” that followed. Then, Metzger had a turn in the spotlight for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me, Momma.” Next up was “Mama Tried” for back-to-back mother songs. A beautiful “Candyman” and well-jammed, 22-minute “Truckin’” brought the frame to a close.

Metzger led JRAD through “Feel Like A Stranger” to get Saturday’s second set underway. From there, “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot!” were followed by “Throwing Stones.” The five-piece reached near silence as the “Throwing Stones” jam began and then started teasing “Shakedown Street” at a slow pace before charging into the song. Saturday’s “Shakedown” was played straight until the end when a particularly cool segment featuring “Slipknot!” teases and a massive peak paved the way for a return to “Throwing Stones.”

Benevento starred in a spacey jam within the “Throwing Stones” reprise. The quiet interlude was followed by a build to another strong peak and Metzger belting out the final verse of the In The Dark classic. It was then time for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s first ever “Comfortably Numb.” Tom Hamilton handled lead vocals on the gem from Pink Floyd’s iconic The Wall album and channeled David Gilmour during his solo. A powerful “Morning Dew” in which the band varied tempos throughout ended the set.

The day-appropriate “One More Saturday Night” kicked off a raucous encore that also included “Sugar Magnolia.” Next up for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is a two-night stand at Salvage Station in Asheville September 24 – 25.
