Jerry Garcia ‘GarciaLive Volume 17’ Showcases NorCal 1976 Run

The Jerry Garcia live archival series GarciaLive continues with an installment featuring highlights from three Jerry Garcia Band performances that took place in Northern California over the course of a week in 1976. GarciaLive Volume 17: NorCal ’76 is set for release through Round Records on November 12 and includes preview track “Sugaree.”

The 14-track collection includes standout moments captured by legendary recording engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson during 1976 Jerry Garcia Band shows on November 7 at Berkeley’s Keystone, November 12 at the University of California Davis and November 13 at Arcata’s Humboldt State University. Guitarist Jerry Garcia was joined in the lineup at the time by Grateful Dead bandmates vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux and keyboardist Keith Godchaux as well as drummer Ron Tutt and bassist John Kahn.

Reel damage, tape loss and other issues prevented the release of the full shows. However, “what remains of Betty Cantor-Jackson’s original recordings offers some of the finest performances from this iteration of the Jerry Garcia Band” as per an announcement. Included within are takes on such beloved originals as “Sugaree,” “They Love Each Other” and “Friend Of The Devil” along with covers of Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up,” Allen Toussaint’s “I’ll Take A Melody,” Temptations’ “The Way You Do The Things You Do” and more.

Various bundles are currently available for pre-order at Garcia Family Provisions. Listen to “Sugaree” from GarciaLive Volume 17: NorCal ’76 below:
