Justin Kreutzmann will direct the upcoming Jerry Garcia documentary. The film, which has yet to receive a release date, is presented by RadicalMedia, the Jerry Garcia Family LLC and Red Light Management.
Executive producers for the Garcia doc include Jerry’s daughter Trixie Garcia of the Jerry Garcia Family LLC and others. The film will boast material from the Grateful Dead guitarist’s personal archives including rare never-before-heard interviews with Jerry and those close to him as well as never-before-seen footage captured by Justin Kreutzmann, the son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann.
Justin has directed various Dead-related films over the years including Dead Ringers: The Making of Touch of Grey (1987) and Grateful Dead: Backstage Pass (1992). He was also a producer on Martin Scorsese’s Long Strange Trip (2017) and executive producer on The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir (2014). Justin continues his Dead chronicling with the Jerry Garcia documentary.
Justin Kreutzmann detailed the doc with Deadline:
It’s such a wonderful honor that Trixie and the Garcia family have put that same faith in me to tell Jerry’s story. When people ask what I miss most about him not being around, I think it’s just missing Jerry, the person. People like him don’t come around very often. It’s my dream to capture the feeling you got when you hung out with Jerry and listened to him play music. A lot of people have told the world what they thought of Jerry but I want to show what Jerry thought of the world.
