David Bowie’s “Changes” received a new mix and is available on streaming services. The “Changes (2021 Alternative Mix)” arrives on the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s landmark 1971 Hunky Dory, on which it appears.
A 50th anniversary edition of Hunky Dory is set to arrive on January 7, one day before what would have been Bowie’s 75th birthday and the same day “Changes” came out in the UK. The 50th anniversary edition features the 2015 remaster on a picture disc as well as an annotated poster of the back cover. Additionally, in anticipation of the 50th anniversary release, original producer Ken Scott gave the Hunky Dory highlight “Changes” the remixing treatment.
Scott detailed the remixing process in a press release:
“The new version of ‘Changes’ is a fresh look at Bowie’s classic,” he said. “When listening to the original multi-track I discovered a few things that I had eliminated from the original mix and also a completely different sax solo at the end. It was those things that led me to try a new mix, trying for a slightly harder, more contemporary edge to it.”
