David Crosby Shares Joni Mitchell Cover ‘For Free’ Featuring Sarah Jarosz

Famed musician David Crosby recorded a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “For Free” with multiple Grammy-winner Sarah Jarosz as the title track for his latest album. For Free arrives through BMG on July 23.

Today, Crosby released his rendition of “For Free,” a song Mitchell issued on her 1970 studio album, Ladies Of The Canyon. David Crosby also unveiled For Free track “Rodriguez For A Night,” which he co-wrote with his son, For Free producer James Raymond and Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen.

“Joni’s the greatest living singer/songwriter, and ‘For Free’ is one of her simplest,” said Crosby. “It’s one of my favorite songs because I love what it says about the spirit of music and what compels you to play.”

“Steely Dan’s my favorite band and I’ve admired Donald a long time, so that was a thrill for us,” David Crosby recalled of his “Rodriguez For A Night” collaboration with Donald Fagen. The song is described as “a sharply detailed portrait of outlaws, angels and drugstore cowboys,” which “merges Fagen’s sophisticated storytelling with Crosby’s warmly commanding vocal presence, ultimately making for a glorious collision of worlds.”
