Dave Matthews Band Dusts Off ‘Spaceman’ In Michigan

Dave Matthews Band hit DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan last night. DMB busted out “Spaceman” for the first time in three years on the 2021 Summer Tour stop.

Dave Matthews and company kicked off the show with a trio of classics in “Seek Up,” “Granny” and “Warehouse.” The band then turned to relatively newer material with “Can’t Stop,” “Sweet” and “So Damn Lucky,” with the latter containing elements of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” DMB then headed back once again for “Rhyme & Reason” ahead of “Funny The Way It Is” and “Walk Around The Moon.” DMB unveiled “Walk Around The Moon” in July.

The staple “#41” came next ahead of “Everyday” and the spirited “What Would You Say.” Debuted solo by Dave late last year, “The Ocean And The Butterfly” followed ahead of the unshelving of “Spaceman.” The tune hadn’t been played since September 7, 2018 in Tahoe, as per DMB Almanac. While Dave teased the song’s riff solo at a 2008 DMB concert, “Spaceman” didn’t make its full debut until DMB’s Spring Tour 2009 opener at Madison Square Garden. The studio version of “Spaceman” appears on the group’s album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which arrived on June 2, 2009.

The set continued with “You Might Die Trying” and “The Space Between.” The classic “Jimi Thing” then kicked off a sequence that included partial versions of Huey Lewis And The News’ “I Want A New Drug” and Prince’s “Sexy M.F.” ahead of set-closer “Grey Street.” Dave would come back out for a solo rendition of “Singing From The Windows” which he unveiled during a livestream performance from his home in March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. The band then joined Matthews to close out the evening with Before These Crowded Streets companion songs “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel.”
