Bob Weir and Wolf Bros collected highlights from a June run of concerts in Colorado for the new live album Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros: Live In Colorado. The band previewed the set, which marks their Third Man Records debut and is due out in multiple formats including vinyl on February 18, by releasing the album’s opening track, “New Speedway Boogie.”
Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir is joined in the group by bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane. The band’s shows at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver on June 8 and 9 and at Vail’s Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater on June 11 and 12 also featured pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz as well as The Wolfpack horn and string section of Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown.
The performances were Weir and his bandmates’ first in front of a live audience since the start of the pandemic. “I’ve been workin’ in my spare time on expanding the sonic coloration of the songs I do,” the guitarist explained in a press release. “The Wolfpack is basically a step toward full orchestration – and further, I gotta say, these guys are game. We worked on the arrangements a bit but eventually we needed to trot it all out and play it for folks – and right at that moment, the folks in Colorado reached out and told us they were gonna open up. Holy Shit, WTF? Let’s Go.”
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros: Live In Colorado will be issued digitally, on CD and as standard black double vinyl. An electric tie-dye vinyl version with a screen print insert can be purchased by Third Man Vault members or through the Bob Weir Shop. The compilation consists of eight tracks.
