Today, Billy Strings unveiled “In The Morning Light,” the second single from the Grammy-winning singer-songwriting guitarist’s forthcoming Renewal studio album. A video for the track accompanies the song off Renewal, which will be released via Rounder Records on September 24.
Strings (vocals, guitar, mandolin, piano, synth, guitjo) and his bandmates, Billy Failing (banjo, piano, vocals), Royal Masat (bass, vocals) and Jarrod Walker (mandolin, guitar, vocals) assembled with producer and Renewal contributor Jonathan Wilson (celesta, percussion, harpsichord) to record the 16-track follow-up to 2019’s Home at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville. Guest musicians include Spencer Cullum (pedal steel), John Mailander (violin) and Grant Millikem (synth).
“I listen to this album now and it’s emotional. I could sit there and tweak it forever, but there’s a point where it’s like building a house of cards. Yeah, I could add an extra tower on top, but it might collapse,” Billy said regarding Renewal. “I’ve always doubted myself, and I still do, but this album makes me think, ‘Hey, you’re doing all right, kid. You just need to keep going.’”
Billy Strings wrote “In The Morning Light” with Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass. Strings penned the song for his girlfriend, Ally and debuted “In The Morning Light” with his band at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on her birthday (February 18, 2021) as per Phantasy Tour. Fourteen additional live versions have followed since.
