Billy Strings debuted a New Grass Revival cover during Thursday’s concert at Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington. The guitarist, banjoist Billy Failing, bassist Royal Masat and mandolinist Jarrod Walker unveiled their take on “Love Someone Like Me” early in last night’s first set.
The quartet pulled “Long Forgotten Dream” from 2019’s Grammy-winning album Home to open the show. Next up was the “Love Someone Like Me” premiere. New Grass Revival originally released the song written by Holly Dunn and Radney Foster on their self-titled studio album in 1986. It was then back to Home for an extended “Away From The Mire.”
Billy and company offered up a cover of Bill Monroe’s “Sweet Blue-Eyed Darling” before working Home standout “Must Be Seven” into an adventurous “Pyramid Country” that spanned 15 minutes. “Pyramid Country” gave way to “Thunder,” a song featuring lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Strings. A rare cover of Little Feat’s “Willin’” and beloved classic “Dust In A Baggie” brought the first set to an end.
Last night’s second set began with covers of Doc Watson’s “The Train That Carried My Girl From Town” and the traditional “Black Mountain Rag.” Next up was “While I’m Waiting Here” from 2017’s Turmoil & Tinfoil and a “Shenandoah Valley Breakdown” featuring a “Mind Left Body Jam.” Strings and his mates then put the focus on material from their forthcoming Renewal album as LP tracks “Fire On My Tongue” and “Hellbender” were followed by the Led Zeppelin gem “Four Sticks.” The evening’s final Renewal cut as “Know It All.” From there, the quartet worked Jeff Austin’s “15 Steps” into a “Pyramid Country” reprise before capping the night with “Ruby.”
