One day each year, The Fresh Air Fund invites the public to Sharpe Reservation to enjoy a day of family fun and to celebrate the special season of the north between winter and spring– “maple sugaring season”. Festivities include planetarium shows, live animal shows, storytelling by a local Master Storyteller, dozens of demonstrations from wood carving to blacksmithing, field games, and a children’s nature and craft discovery center. Admission is free. Local food and crafts from Hudson Valley vendors, and lunch, are available for purchase (all sales are cash only).
Taking center stage mid-day, the Maple Syrup Contest draws crowds for the blind taste-testing of maple syrup from operations around the region. Winner of the annual competition earns the coveted title of “Best in the Hudson Valley”. All day, the “Sugar Shack” is open for observing the process of how maple sap is turned to syrup, and visitors can buy maple cotton candy, maple syrup, and other maple products.
