RADIO WOODSTOCK KICKS OFF 2018 SUPPORTER DRIVE ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24; SEEKING TO DOUBLE THEIR TOTAL SUPPORTERS
FIRST-EVER COMMERCIAL FM RADIO STATION EXCLUSIVELY SUPPORTED BY LISTENERS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES IS MORE ESSENTIAL THAN EVER
Exactly one year ago, Radio Woodstock (100.1 WDST licensed to Woodstock, New York) launched a groundbreaking new model in commercial FM radio, becoming the first station of its kind to be exclusively local business and listener supported. Radio Woodstock currently has 500 supporters and is seeking to double that number to 1000 by the end of its third week-long Supporter Drive, which launches on Saturday, February 24th.
With the support of its listeners, Radio Woodstock has cut back the number of commercial minutes per hour and caps commercial breaks at two and a half minutes, providing a better listening experience, and more exclusive exposure for local advertisers. Currently many stations in the region run 14 or more minutes of commercials per hour, some with commercial breaks of 6 minutes or longer. In addition, Radio Woodstock has opted-out of Nielsen’s rating audience measurement service, freeing up the station to play music and create programming without having to pander to ratings. Listener support enables the station to focus on advertising products and services compatible with the Woodstock ethos, gaining the freedom to refuse advertising dollars from big box and multinational corporations.
Radio Woodstock has carried out numerous station improvements because of listener support, including the acquisition of new broadcast equipment for its studio and remote broadcast operations, stage lights for its Utopia Soundstage (which hosts numerous intimate concerts for supporters and listeners) and a new computer server central for the operation of the station.
