FARMAGEDDON 2012, a 12-hour festival for the musical arts, will be held beginning at 12 noon on Sat., August 4, at 110 Lauren Tice Road in Saugerties, where music, arts and crafts, food and a myriad of local bands and DJs will be affixed in one of the town’s typically pastoral fields nestled in the heart of the Hudson Valley. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to benefit the Saugerties Central School District’s Musical Arts Department and to the town of Saugerties itself.
As the end-of-summer harvests herald the coming of Autumn, the FARMAGEDDON 2012 Festival is a means to an end; the end being that of the humdrum dog days of summer. Harmonized in the name of artistry and organized by Bill Cusack and Lacey McMahon, who are siblings and lifetime residents of Saugerties, N.Y., FARMAGEDDON 2012 all began as a pipe dream.
“It is our intent, with the money raised from this event to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Saugerties Central School District for the musical arts department so that all our children can continue to express themselves through the art of music,” Bill said. “A vast majority of the musicians who will be performing have flourished because of the music they learned from the school, and are also members of our community, including myself. We now have a chance to give something back to the people that gave to us.”
With the adoption of a more than $52 million austerity budget for the 2010/2011 school year, sports, stipends for extracurricular activities, instrumental programs, art electives, and more than 50 staff positions were eliminated. With arts programs teaching a specific set of thinking skills seldom addressed elsewhere in the curriculum, these cuts will be detrimental to future creative minds – your future musicians, sound technicians, actors, writers and designers.
“FARMAGEDDON means a lot to me because I have music in my blood,” Lacey said. “I think it will be very successful because Saugerties is a musical town; a lot of people play music and create music here. There is so much awesome local talent here that it’s almost ridiculous!”
Aside from Lacey and Bill’s musical roots, some of the other creative minds behind FARMAGEDDON 2012 include area artists Brandon Chrisjohn, who created the event’s logo; Jackie Peeler, Dave Meade and Scott Grower.
At noon, the musical performances kick off, accompanied by painting and glass blowing art vendors. The FARMAGEDDON 2012 musical lineup comprises Spin Cycle Lava, Voodelic, Martyr Art, The New Creek People, Zonder Kennedy & the Scoville Junkies, The Jonny Monster Band, The Band of Strings, Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers, Liquid Ernie, Funk Button, Creeper, Brandon Advanced and DJ Ean Nice.
In addition, a variety of local sponsors and food vendors will be present, including Dave’s Coffee House, Pippy’s Hotdog Truck and Jumpin Jack Flash Kitchen on Wheels. Another local area sponsor includes Overlook Mountain Labradors.
Tickets to the 21 and over event, which are $40, can be obtained at the gate or in advance by contacting 845-514-8400.
Parking fees are included in the ticket price. Food vendors will be on site, although coolers are allowed. No glass bottles please.
